Some Philippine Wedding Traditions
A Philippine wedding is wrought in myth, legend, folklore, Christianity, superstition, and local customs. It is difficult to keep tab on the many rites that are to be observed for the bride and groom, things that they should and should not do starting from the day of engagement to the honeymoon. In this article, we focus our attention on the several quaint practices:
- The groom should never watch the bride in her gown before the day of the wedding. If pictorials are to be arranged days before the marriage, the bride should wear a different dress.
- Rice, salt, or sugar are peppered or thrown upon the couple once they go out from the threshold of the Church in a Philippine wedding. This is to ensure that the future family will be blest abundantly from above.
- Candles are lit within the religious service. They should never, at any time, be put out. They have to be lighted at all times. An extinguished candle can be understood as a bad luck.
- Rain on a Philippine wedding day is understood to be a blessing, not in material things but in the number of the brood in the future. Checking out the weather forecast before deciding on a wedding date is considered a sound advice.
These wedding customs and traditions is what make a Philippine wedding beautiful and an exciting event.
