The History of Philippine Wedding
Here at PhilippineWeddingScenes.com we did some internet research and found out that the history of Philippine wedding started with pre-colonial era, a period that spans from 3century BC to 1500’s. Documents and archeological finds have revealed that old inhabitants of Philippine islands did not allow courtship to happen. The couple was betrothed from childhood, dowry was exacted, and superstition abound in the wedding celebration.

When the Spanish came in 1560’s, the Catholic ministers absorbed some pagan practices of the tribes and Christianized them. The Philippine wedding received an overhaul: the dowry was expressed through the arrhae, the celebration was held inside a church, the pagan idol was replaced with the triumphant Risen Jesus. Other practices also evolved, such as the choice of wedding dress, blessing from the minister, etc.
The Americans also influenced the way the Philippine wedding is conducted. As American soldiers were largely Protestants, this Christian sect has given a less ceremonious wedding ceremony. The use of symbolic gifts, such as arrhae and cord, were given up in favor of the wedding rings.
The post-war form owes much of its tradition from the combined influences of pre-colonial, Spanish colonization, and American occupation. After the World War II, evolution takes place as wedding becomes more and more of a ritual than an integral part of marriage.
